My Dad, Gary & His Craft

Born and raised in rural post- WWII New England, My father, Gary, was the son of a decorated Air Force bomber pilot, Elvin ‘Abby’ Auger, and dedicated home maker, Therese Auger. Abby was the most honest, hard working, down to earth man I have ever known. When his country needed him, he enlisted to do his part. He always believed in a hard days work for a fair days wages, and worked hard to instill these values into his 3 sons. Gary took many of Abbys lessons to heart, and uses them every day as principles and guidelines by which he lives.

Over the years, I have watched my father treat those close to him, any complete stranger, and everything he owned with respect. If you ever heard him explaining… well, anything, you would find his mannerisms, tone and honest desire for you to completely understand the topic at hand on par with that of a patient and learned wise man of old, sharing his knowledge with future generations.

I describe this in regards to this business simply because it encapsulates his character in whole. It transcends both his personal life and his craft so seamlessly that dealing with him as a client is like dealing with a dear old friend.

When my father builds a masterpiece, as each item is in its own rite, his attention to function is as artful as his attention to form. True to classic New England style designs, his crafts are solid and sturdy, requisite in centuries prior to assure longevity through generations of living off the land and building with what God provided.

Each piece my father builds draws on his passion for his craft, his father’s lessons about the duty to each man to do his job right – the first time, and the magic in his heart and fingers. To own a piece of art, furniture, however you choose to label it, is to own a piece of America, a piece of a dream that will last for generations.
